face as she did not want to give us her name. and tells us that she plans on standing by him until a court issues a final ruling. and he is behind bars tonight. facing various sex abuse charges. he is scheduled for a bond hearing tomorrow. rick carl admitted in court to sexually abusing the then 13- year-old swimmer. even though it happened decades ago, he felt compelled when he saw a photo coaching the other young girls. >> what do you think. any comments? >> reporter: he left the courthouse with sentencing still hanging over him. and he is looking at the possibility of 15 years in prison. for abusing one of his young swimmers. fondling and sexual intercourse over the course of years, at the pool, at her parent's home, everywhere he could get his

hands on her. >> this has a lifelong impact on her. it doesn't go away. >> reporter: the victim stood silently next to the prosecutor after the guilty plea, giving them $150,000. back in the 18 -- 1980s. but curran says when she saw him coaching other young swimmers at olympic tryouts, she could no longer remain silent. >> when you're 13, 14, 15, you're note in a voluntary relationship with someone that is 20 years or a senior or your coach. that's abuse. >> reporter: he was running one of the country's biggest swim clubs, but it changed its name to the nation's cap tool swim club after coming forward and accusing him of abuse. they banned the elite coach for life. they declined to say if he might have abused other young

swimmers, but encouraged any victim to come forward no matter how old the allegations. and there is no statute of limitations on felonies. she is saving her words for the victim impact statement at the sentencing. in rockville, wusa9.com. >> now, that sentencing is set for may. he'll be facing far more time if he abused curran under the tough child abuse laws. behind bars tonight, accused of robbing and killing a retired atf agent while walking his dog. it happened just last night where kristin fisher joins us live with the latest on the investigation, kristin? >> reporter: greg holly has spent his entire career praying for those life or death

moments, but probably never thought that it would come right here on a quiet street in a safe neighborhood. the 55-year-old was one block away from his home when he was confronted by a robber. what happened next is still under investigation. but he was robbed and shot and in prince william county police say that this is the man who did it. the 25-year-old. >> that's him right there. have you ever seen him? >> yes. >> no, i have not seen him at all. >> reporter: this woman lives on the same street as smith did. and he was spotted and chased down by an off-duty lieutenant. >> i was in the house and 14 cop cars came on in. >> it was swarmed with those cots. i have never seen so many cots. >> reporter: the next morning, they were back out at the scene of the crime, picking up a bullet casing that was left behind. >> we're out here every day walking our dogs. every day. >> reporter: it was a scary place to be. to be doing what he was doing, right where he was killed.

>> and i was coming home from class last night, right around that same time. >> reporter: it could have been anyone. so everyone is wondering why greg. >> he had a tremendous relationship with all four of his sons. loving them grately as they loved him back, even though that they are all grown with a tremendous relationship with his wife and just a great loving fame. who wanted to not only succeed in life, but to see the others succeed. >> in fact after retiring from the atf, he had become the cfo >> he was a tremendous man, if you ever want to find a modeled citizen, you will find it. serving in the entire careers, making it, not getting hurt when something happens like that. but that's the irony of life as we don't know what happens tomorrow. >> but we do know what tomorrow is going to look like for

smith, the suspect. he'll be arraigned in court tomorrow morning at 8:30 and prosecutors told me that they could seek the death penalty in this case. as for the victim's family, well, i spoke to them as they declined to comment on camera because they are clearly devastated about what happened, but they did issue a statement. i will read you a part of it, saying that his work was about fighting violent crimes and unfortunately it was violent crimes that took his life. back to you. >> what a loss. thank you. and they say that it looks like a tragic accident and in this case, stopping their car here last night and then it began rolling backwards. his 3-year-old son is in the vehicle and somehow fell out and was run over. the little boy, he was pronounced dead at the area hospital. his 2-year-old brother suffers minor injuries. it doesn't look like foul play or alcohol were factors in the accident. there were court hearings here today for three of the

five suspects arrested yesterday for the murder of the suttland high school. one appeared yesterday. one is being held in d.c. awaiting extradition. but all five are charged with first-degree murder for the monday shooting death of charles c.j. walker jr. the 15-year-old is among six prince george's county school students to be murdered just since school started in august. and as outrage mounts over the epidemic of teen violence in the county, police are promising they are on the verge of closing another one of those cases. they have continued to spiral out of control. the good news is that police, they are now promising that this case, that it is solved.

here is the police chief speaking on tuesday. >> i'm already seeing that they are making progress, the homicide investigation. and that they are not going to bring the son back. >> reporter: that's their mother here today. >> it's like a numb. >> reporter: who is quietly reliving the horror of her son's tragedy. >> it had is the memory -- this is the memory case. >> reporter: as three more students have been murdered on central avenue in capital heights in what appeared to be a robbery. >> i just feel sorry for their loss. i can't grieve for my own son as you see every day it is something going on and i'm saying to myself that this is so sad and it is something that really needs to stop. >> they were shared on tuesday by the state attorney. >> they will arrest the individual, we will bring them to justice and then we will need our community to come together to ensure that we're not just reacting. >> the path of not raising the

kids, the children, they are raising themselves. >> and she told me that it was only two weeks after the murder here that his younger brother was held up at gunpoint for only $2. and as he was walking home from mcdonald's, a shocking close call. for a family that has already suffered way too much. in capital heights, scott broom, wusa9. of the 6 student murders in prince george's county, four are considered unsolved, but still a mystery. the case of 17-year-old amber stanley killed in her home back in august, an 18-year-old aaron kidd dying in forestville back on tuesday as well. sadly there is more tragedy to talk about in prince george's county. three people including two kids died in a house fire. now this one happened around 4:00 this morning on leslie avenue and glenn arden as our surae chinn joins us live now at the tragedy house. >> reporter: a family of six

lived in that house just beyond the yellow tape. in just a few moments, in a short few minutes half of their family was wiped out. >> reports of four children trapped. >> reporter: firefighters arrived within five minutes, but even that was too late. >> our family is hurting. i just hope that everybody is okay. >> reporter: but it would not be okay. the family talks with wusa9 as they arrive add one of the most awful sites they could imagine. >> i already knew it was my niece's house, so we walked right over. >> reporter: the fire ripped through the home around 4:00 in the morning at the 8600 block. the 33-year-old mother and her 8-year-old daughter jumped through a window. >> i heard one of my little nieces ran to a neighbor's house. >> reporter: but four others were trapped inside the home. firefighters pulled the dad and their three other daughters. they had no pulse and all had to be given cpr.

the father, the 8-year-old twin sisters, and her 4-year-old sister all died. the 11-year-old is in grave condition tonight. the family dog found shivering inside the house more than four hours after the fire began. >> the only indication is that this was nothing more than a tragic accidental fire. >> reporter: one that perhaps could have been prevented. there were no smoke alarms. >> and that particular fact is very sad for me and very frustrating. we shouldn't have anymore fires in a home without a smoke alarm. we had a fire yesterday morning in a home. a smoke alarm, successfully woke up that occupant. he was able to get out. and i have a home this morning with no smoke alarms and lost three people tragically. >> reporter: lost three people. the firefighters, they have spent a couple of hours in this neighborhood. handing out literature. talking to neighbors, also handing out those smoke detectors. the tragedies this morning bring the total here so far to

right now police are trying to get to a terrifying scene on the las vegas strip. involving a maserati and an suv leaving three people dead. three others hurt. a group of omen in the suv pulled up -- a group of men pulled up along the car and opened fire. the maserati swerved through an intersection, hitting at least four other cars. a taxi ended up catching on fire. the maserati driver, the cab driver, and the passenger in

fatally shot his girlfriend, reeva at their home. they say he intended to kill his girlfriend when he fired four times through a bathroom door. he claimed he thought she was an intruder. the victim's best friend said that reeva was very passionate about women against abuse. >> reporter: pistorius faces life in prison if convicted of pre-meditated murder. cbs news. a decision on pistorius' bail is expected tomorrow when the hearing resumes. his trial is not expected for several months. a massive winter storm is now plowing their way through the midwest. heavy snowfalling all day long -- heavy snow is falling all day long, causing major whiteout conditions. schools and state offices shut

down and with a 90 mile stretch of i-70 closed, tow trucks as you imagine are in high demand. >> i just heard another call looking for a record to pull somebody in it and they are talking about five-hour delays. >> i've got three or four waiting on me right now. >> five-hour delay. can you imagine that? by the way the same storm alsocoated arkansas in sleet and ice. now get this despite all the headaches, they're bad about the precipitation in the midwest because they've had a severe drought for some time now. seems like topper shutt is saying the same thing about us around here. >> we could use some of that. the plains will be getting more storms which is actually a good thing. now as you know we get big storms around here. thunder and lightning, thunder snow. all right, we'll take you to wichita, kansas and have a listen. some of the snowfall rates were

1 to 3 inches -- inches per hour. the worse that we have had all year. >> how much have we had this year? >> one to two inches. >> what is the all-time lease snow record? >> .2. >> we're past that? >> yes. >> okay, let's take a live look outside. it's gorgeous. just kind of snow outside. temperatures, almost 10 degrees below average right now. and 39, dew points 13. so that is something that you'll want to watch. the dry air will drag the temperatures down. so we're going to watch that carefully still a little breeze, but not the strong 30, 35 miles per hour that we had yesterday. howard talked about it on wednesday and we will repeat it again. a massive storm. another piece of it comes back around and we'll form a coastal storm, bringing us rain on saturday and could slam into new england. in the meantime it is not going

to hold together. that's what they will be doing with the big virgin islands a piece of it will be getting on in here and because of that we have winter weather advisories west of the divide. i think that we're going to see a brief period of snow and sleet in the metro area, which is never a good thing as you're trying to get home on friday evening. the timing again could not be worse. 36 in germantown and reston and springfield. 39 downtown at college park and 37 in waldorf. so it's not quite as cold tonight, friday morning's commute will be fine, but it will be possible for the evening commute, looking like a lock at this point and then more rain on saturday as the secondary storm begins to take over off the coast, then move up towards new england. clouds are in place and still in place here, but still dry in the metro area. yeah, we're picking up some

snow here. but in the immediate metro area, still dry. 7:30 you can get to work. okay, 9:00, if you're not at work now, you've got the snow breaking out at culpepper, but you are inside the beltway. you're at work, then you're all right. get to the 11:00 hour by now and up towards winchester. and then by the afternoon, i think that we will see a batch of snow, even in the metro area and prince george's county for an hour or so as they will be wiping out the ground, mix with sleep at -- sleet at times. this is a mixture as we get into the 3:30 hour and then even at about this time tomorrow, snow is still possible between d.c. and baltimore. never a good thing for them on the friday evening commute. so consequently we have kept tomorrow a 9 weather alert yellow day on saturday with the rain, 43. and then finally a nice day on sunday with the temperatures back up to near 50. the next seven-day forecast, we're in pretty good shape with another cold rain that will be coming at us on tuesday, which will benefit the midwest with the snow and rain.

keeping the travelers out of the air. in fact, reagan international airport is reporting 2012 a record year. 19.7 million travelers are passing through the arlington airport this past year, an increase of 4.4% over 2011. the airport security say that it was a different story, however, over dulles, where the travel was off by nearly 3% in 2012 compared to the year before. >> the federal safety investigators are on the scene of the deadly plane crash in georgia tonight. five people killed when the small jet crashed near their runway last night at the county airport. that's about 30 miles west of augusta. the ntsb said that the pilot of the beach craft boarded the landing. hitting the utility pole before crashing. two people survived there in the hospital as they took off from nashville. >> well, you can see where they are right now as they have determined that the john hopkin's guy that took his own life died from affixuation.
